One-term McCain pledge

Peggy Noonan argues in the WSJ that McCain should make a one-term-presidency pledge to delegates at the Republican convention, writing "I still think a one-term pledge could win it for him, because it would allow America to punt. It would make the 2008 choice seem less fateful." She concludes:

Mr. McCain told Politico on Wednesday that he's not considering a one-term pledge.

Why would he not? Such modesty of intent is at odds with the political personality. The thing that makes them want to rule America is the thing that stops them from thinking of prudent limits. This mindset crosses all political categories.

As if we really want to throw away another four years.

SPECIAL COVERAGE I live-blogged the spontaneous Obama victory celebration in Washington DC. Experience what it felt like to be among thousands of deliriously happy people gathered outside the White House. Click here.

Previously, I had been blogging about the Obama, McCain and the US election. I wrote about Sarah Palin on this blog even before McCain chose her to be his running mate. The choice was disappointing, and a possibility I had anticipated.
